Gwenn A. Nusbaum ‘s devotion for writing poetry was almost organic. She earned a B.A. in Psychology with almost as many credits in English and Literature, then obtained a Master of Social Work at New York University. Subsequently, she received additional postgraduate certificates in various areas of Relational psychoanalytic treatments.
Gwenn developed the craft of writing poetry through an ongoing independent program inclusive of conferences and intensive workshops. Of key import was her long-term mentoring friendship with the late poet Colette Inez, as well as her editing one with the late poet, Dean Kostos.
Gwenn’s poetry chapbook, “Normal War,” is part of the 2014 chapbook collection on display at The Poets House in Lower Manhattan. Her poems have appeared widely in print and on-line poetry journals.
In 2022, Gwenn retired from a forty-year psychoanalytic psychotherapy and teaching practice in which she also published articles related to her specialty work with trauma survivors, specifically women with histories of childhood sexual abuse.
Born in Manhattan and raised in northwestern New Jersey, Gwenn maintains an enduring connection to her countrified roots, as well as passion for New York City. She holds a deep respect for the subjects of her writing and resonates with the idea of poet as witness. She is honored to have founded the Gwenn A. Nusbaum Scholarship in affiliation with the Walt Whitman Birthplace Association in Huntington, Long Island.
